About Us
The ‘Extra Time SUFC Learning Zone’ started life as part of the DfE’s ‘Playing for Success’ initiative. This scheme was set up in 1997 to help improve standards in English, Maths and ICT and to increase student motivation to learn by raising self-confidence and self-esteem.
The original centre was based at Roots Hall, the home of Southend United Football Club. It was officially opened in July 2006 by Maurice Smith, Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Schools.
Since 1997, through the PfS initiative, the government established out of school hours study support centres within a range of professional sports clubs. The centres used the medium of football, rugby and other sports to help motivate students identified by their schools and had a proven track record of improving English, Maths and ICT skills.
Until recently there were over 150 centres nationwide supporting over 55,000 students each year. Unfortunately the government withdrew funding for centres recently. Due to this change the centre has now moved to Cecil Jones College, in partnership with 5 other local schools; Bournemouth Park Primary School, Hamstel Infant and Junior Schools, St. Nicholas School and Temple Sutton Primary School.
We are able to continue the great work of the original centre with the support of Southend United Football Club and are able to use the opportunity to develop even more creative and motivational courses.
The Extra Time SUFC Learning Zone was officially opened by The Worshipful the Mayor Cllr David Norman on Thursday 15th September 2011.
"I think the children learn here as the programme is fun and challenging. All the students have made progress with their confidence as well as ICT, Maths and English skills.’’
Simon Harrison, Teacher, Temple Sutton Primary School
‘’It was an eye opener for him and gave him the opportunity to be a part of a learning experience outside the usual classroom setting.’’
Parent, Temple Sutton Primary School
"It’s a great opportunity to learn in a smaller group, meet pupils from other schools and have a lot of fun. Buster has found the experience very enjoyable.’’
Parent, Cecil Jones College
"I enjoyed working with other people and being trusted to finish tasks on my own. I have definitely got better at ICT. I wouldn’t change anything, it is perfect the way it is."
Melissa, Bournemouth Park Primary School
Playing for Success
This academic year will be the first in the new centre and will build on the work of the previous centre. We aim to work with 250 students through the PfS programme, providing students with an additional 24 hours of learning to raise standards in literacy and numeracy.
With the Learning Zone now being based at Cecil Jones College and through the partnership with Southend United Football Club we are able to offer students access to excellent facilities at both sites. The Learning Zone is equipped with a suite of laptops, i-Macs, iPads, DS2s, i-Pods, Wii and a suite of iDesk PCs. The centre is designed to be a flexible and motivational working space in which studens enjoy working.
The partnership schools select students to attend the course based on their understanding of the student’s needs and current progress. Programmes are aimed at a full range of needs, including gifted and talented students.
Students attend a 6 week course with sessions taking place from 3.45pm to 6.30pm one night a week. The course culminates with a presentation evening, where students can share with parents the highlights of the course and what they have learned.
The Learning Zone provides transortation to and from the centre in its own minibus as well as refreshments. The visiting school will provide an escort. All teachers at the Learning Zone are fully qualified.

The Southend United Double Club is an exciting programme which offers pupils a Playing for Success (PfS) classroom experience, usually in their schools, combined with opportunities to participate in the playing of sport. The classroom lessons use sport and club resources as the motivation to engage pupils. Facilities
The ‘Extra Time SUFC Learning Zone’ offers facilities appropriate for a range of activities for groups of up to 16 people.
Attached to Cecil Jones College, the ‘Learning Zone’ has a separate and secure entrance next to the ample main car park.
There are 3 spaces within the centre, each tailored to suit a range of activities.
The first ICT suite, the ‘Red Room’, allows delegates to each work individually on a laptop. Each laptop has internet and printer access. The tables are arranged in 4 banks of 4 to facilitate collaborative working if needed.
There is also a 50" TV display that can be connected to a laptop to facilitate presentations.
The Blue Room at the Learning Zone connects the ‘Red’ and ‘Yellow’ rooms. This is a highly flexible space that can be used in a number of ways. There is a central island of 8 i-desks. These can be lowered to create a boardroom meeting desk or raised to allow access to 8 PC’s, again with full internet access. The i-desks are also moveable if delegates would like to create a more open working space.
Again, there is a 50"’ TV display that can be connected to a laptop for presentations.
There is also access in this room to 5 i-Mac desktops.
The final room is the ‘Yellow’ room. This provides a comfortable relaxation area, with toilet facilities. This is an excellent space to relax between activities or simply to meet in a less formal setting.

Simon Turnnidge has been named as the new Learning Zone Manager with effect from 1 January 2012. Here is a first introduction from Simon:
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself; my name is Simon Turnnidge and I have just been appointed as the new Manager of the Extra Time SUFC Learning Zone.
As an experienced member of staff, I have been teaching PE for a number of years and have also been Head of Department for 6 years in a secondary school.
I am an experienced manager of a local football team and enjoy playing all sport, including cricket. I support Southend United Football Club and am keen to get students inspired through this team and the services that the Learning Zone provides.
My overall vision and aim is to see students improve their confidence and self esteem in literacy and numeracy; and for this to be apparent in their results both inside and outside of the classroom. I would like to inspire students to improve and make progress, ensuring that all opportunities are available to them through the Learning Zone.
Regardless of ability and age, the Learning Zone has something fun and informative that caters for all. I look forward to seeing the enthusiasm and enjoyment the students will experience through the Extra Time SUFC Learning Zone.
The Jack Petchey Achievement Award for November was presented to Hannah from Shoeburyness High School.
Hannah attends the school's Double Club and received the award in recognition of her consistently working hard. She is a great support to her peers, always ready to offer them encouragement and has recently achieved assessment scores of over 95% which was quite exceptional. As part of her award Hannah was able to choose how to spend £200 on items for the Learning Zone and Double Club. After discussing it with her peers it was decided to complete their Southend United kits with new football socks and spent the rest of the money on new football training equipment. Well Done Hannah!
The Extra Time _ SUFC Learning Zone was officially opened by The Worshipful the Mayor Cllr David Norman on Thursday 15th September 2011.
Guests from local schools, the local authority and Southend United Football Club were welcomed into the new Learning Zone. We also welcomed back some of our previous students who had come along to help show our guests some of the activities used in the centre - most of these students are now Year 7 and Year 8 students at Cecil Jones College. It was a great opportunity for everyone to look at how the work of the Learning Zone will continue on from the success of the Study Support Centre which had previously been located at Roots Hall.
